Prostheses
Prostheses are dentures that replace the missing teeth for different reasons in the mouth, and provide for the fulfillment of functional and aesthetic needs in the mouth. Tooth deficiencies usually occur as a result of not being able to treat gum diseases. Or tooth deficiencies may occur as a result of any impact or trauma.
For What Purposes Are Prostheses Used?
The purpose of prosthetic teeth is to ensure that the person does not have problems in speaking and chewing. In addition, a natural-looking prosthesis suitable for the person’s face also preserves the aesthetic appearance of the teeth.
Who Can Use Prosthetic Teeth?
- In missing teeth lost for any reason,
- Broken, deformed, discolored teeth,
- Prosthetic tooth application can be used in individuals who do not receive orthodontic treatment.
What are the types of prosthetic teeth?
Dental prostheses are divided into two main branches as fixed prostheses and removable prostheses. If we examine the types of fixed prosthesis;
Crown-Bridge Prostheses
It is a form of treatment applied by filling the gaps that come with the loss of one or more teeth and getting support from other teeth. It is divided into two as fixed bridge and movable bridge. Fixed bridges can only be removed by experts, while movable bridges can be removed by oneself. A fixed bridge is a bridge applied by taking support from neighboring teeth. Together with the fixed bridge, the artificial tooth fills the space of the lost tooth. The applied artificial tooth is attached with crowns prepared on the person’s own teeth. In this treatment, after the preparation of the teeth and the measurement of the teeth, the treatment ends in 1-2 weeks, in an average of 3 sessions. Prostheses can be used for a long time as long as attention is paid to the care of the applied prostheses.
Zirconium Crown-Bridge Prosthesis
Today, along with dental health, the aesthetic beauty of the teeth is given great importance. For this reason, there are new treatment applications with the developing technology. Instead of metal-supported porcelains, zirconium-based porcelains are used. Zirconium coatings have a much more aesthetic and natural appearance compared to the metal coatings used before due to their light transmittance. Zirconium crowns are more compatible with the gingiva. It can be easily applied to people with metal allergies.
What are the advantages?
- The artificial image seen in metal-supported porcelain is not seen in zirconium. It has a more natural look.
- It is more compatible with the gums. Does not cause allergies.
- It can give a more aesthetic appearance when applied on the colors of the discolored teeth.
- It is a treatment method that can be applied to both anterior and posterior teeth.
Implant-Top Crown-Bridge Prosthesis
Over-implant prostheses are removable or fixed prostheses placed on implants. Implant-mounted prostheses, which are made in accordance with the patient’s oral structure and tooth problem, can be applied in two ways: removable by the patient and removable by specialists. Implant-supported prostheses, which have a more natural appearance compared to classical bridges and prostheses, can be used in people who have no teeth, partial tooth deficiencies, implants that require a superstructure, and smile designs.
Laminate Dentures
It is a treatment method that is applied by sticking it to the front of the teeth with a thickness of approximately 0.5 mm. Although these veneers are very thin, they do not easily separate from the teeth. A porcelain lamina prepared in accordance with the structure and shape of the tooth cannot be separated from the tooth. Porcelain laminates provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance. They look natural due to their light transmittance.
If we examine the removable prostheses;
Total Dentures
Prostheses are a form of treatment that aims to replace missing teeth for an aesthetic and healthy smile in general. Missing teeth can damage neighboring teeth. Total prostheses are a treatment method that can be applied if there are no teeth left in the mouth. It is a form of prosthesis made of acrylic that is supported by the bone tissue in the lower and upper jaws and is held in the mouth by vacuum power. It is known as “Palate prosthesis” among the people. Total prosthesis can be applied in obligatory cases where implant treatment cannot be applied. Total dentures are dental prostheses that are renewed every 5 years. It is not considered appropriate to use porcelain in total prostheses, plastic teeth are used. This leads to discoloration of the teeth. You can clean these discolorations with special cleaners sold in pharmacies.
Temporary (Immediate) Prostheses
Temporary removable prostheses (immediate prostheses) are temporary prostheses applied in order not to leave the area empty after the extraction of the tooth is decided. It aims to use the tooth extraction area aesthetically and functionally. They are generally used in implant treatments. With the extraction of many teeth before the implant, a temporary prosthesis can be applied instead of the tissues in the place of the extracted teeth during the healing process. Temporary removable prostheses can be applied to a single tooth, as well as to multiple teeth or the entire jaw.
